Mundarie Tutorial: A simple conversation

(  Two old friends meet after a long time and the following conversation starts between them. This simple conversation is aimed to help our readers understand and learn a bit of Mundari language. Mundari is a rich language spoken by the people of Munda tribe, one of the oldest tribes in India.  )


Marsal : जोहार हाले !                                                                               

                Greetings friend!

                
Hemant: जोहार !  चिलिका मेना मेय ?
               Greetings! How are you?

 

Marsal: बेस गी । हर आम दो ?
              Fine. And you?

 

Hemant : ईन हो बेस गी मेना यां | बहुत दिन बाद लांग नापाम ताना । कोता रे मेना मा निमिर ?
               I am also good. We are meeting after such a long time. Where are you these days? 

 

Marsal : निमिर दो इं राँची रे कामी  तनैङ्ग , रेलवे विभाग रे । हार आम दो ?
              These days, I am working at Ranchi, in Railway Department. And what about you? 
  

Hemant : ईन दो सिमडेगा रे स्टेट बैंक ओफ इंडिया रे बैंक मैनेजर तनिंग । 
               I am Bank Manager in State Bank of India, Simdega.

 

 

Marsal : आमके मिसा लेका फ़ोन बडा ले मेयन ,माखिर काय सब केदा ।
              Tried phone calling you a couple of times, but somehow it did not connect.  

 

 

Hemant : हेया इयाँ मोबाइल नंबर बदली केदैं । आमके कईन्ग उदुब धडी जाना । नावा नंबर दो 9957953104
ताना ।
               Oh yeah, I have changed my mobile number. I could not intimate you. My new number is
9957953104. 

 

 

Marsal : धनयाबाद ।  हार ओड़ा को रा चीकन नवा ख़बर ?
              Thank you.  Any new news at home?

 

 

Hemant : ख़बर दो या नवा चीना उदुबा में , ऐना गी दांग बाबा को ले ईर छाबा लादा  । 
              What new news shall I tell you, It’s just that we are about to finish reaping our rice harvest.  

 

 

Marsal: आम पड़ दो ?
              And about yours?                 

 


Hemant : दादा गा अंडदी तै केना । मरचा हातू ते हिली ले आऊ कजा । 
              We had elder brother’s marriage. Brought our sister-in-law from Marcha village.

Marsal : बहुत बेस । ईंया उमा हो मरचा हातू रेन गी तानि । 
              Wao! Even my mother is from Marcha village.

 

 

Hemant : ठीक गी या । आम लो  बकंड के ते बड़ा बेस अटकर के दांग ।
               Ok then. It was great talking to you. 

 

 

Marsal : हे या । नेका गी लंग नापम बड़ा कते ना ।
              Yeah (Same here). We will try meeting like this.

 

 

Hemant: ठीक ताम । फ़ोन बड़ाइन मे हेई ।
               Ok then. Keep calling me ok! 

 

 

Marsal : ठीक । ओड़ा रेन सोगेर को के जोहार कजिया कोमे ।
              Ok fine. Convey my greetings to everybody at home.

 

 

Hemant: ठीक ।
               Ok. 

 

( They both depart )
